Course Overview
This introduction to Stems and Branches (aka Five Movements and Six Energies, wuyun liuqi ????) contextualizes the foundations of practice. We will look at the world of space and time, in terms of Five and Six, so as to open a door onto an ordered universe and constant cosmos, which follows natural laws that can be determined.

By understanding the cyclical nature of time and space we start to learn about Stems and Branches, which are the thread that weaves together many aspects of Chinese thought.

We will look at the relationship between Stems and space, and their role as the foundation of wuxing ?? Five Phases. This will extend our understanding of the interactions between zangfu ?? organs and open the door to a discussion of practical applications. We also explore the relationship between the Branches and time, the resonances of the Chinese clock, and how it relates to the seasons and human lifespan.

Additionally we look into earlier Heaven (xiantian ??) to later Heaven (houtian ??), how that relates to space and time, and discuss the role of the 'organs with name but no form' that are so key to the function of the Ministerial Fire. Additionally we explore how the channels not only circulate qi in the body, but act as the interface between our interior world and the environment. All this gives us a deeper understanding of the universal cycles of time and how these are mirrored in the channels in the body.
  • Understand how the original cosmic relationships which tie humans into the universal cycles (Stems and Branches) underpins the practice of Chinese Medicine.
  • Explore the relationship of the heavenly Stems and Space, along with the earthly Branches and Time, and how these are expressed in the body.
  • Understand the Stems as the foundation of Five Phases (wuxing) and the ten zangfu organs, and how the Branches gives rise to the 12 channels along with Ministerial and Imperial Fire.
  • Learn to see new correspondences in the relationships between organs, seasons and time, the five phases and the great Yun movements of heaven.
  • Explore deeper questions on the Stems and Branches.

    About Deborah Woolf

I am crazy keen acupuncturist and super enthusiastic lecturer, who, by chance, have discovered and loved the cosmology and numerology inherent in Chinese Philosophy and Medicine. I was lucky to study at the International College of Oriental Medicine, the oldest acupuncture college in the UK, which teaches all the acupuncture points, as well as philosophy and theory, based on Five Phases, wuxing ??, and Stems and Branches, wuyun liuqi ????. My course was a 5 year long extravaganza, and I came out the other side, exhausted, changed and driven. Since then (more than 20 years ago) I have not stopped treating, teaching and studying: these three activities interact fruitfully with each other, allowing me to deepen my understanding and practice of this amazing approach to health, the body and the cosmos. As I am the daughter of academics I took what I was taught and read around the subjects, to immerse myself more fully in ancient Chinese culture. I continue my education in classical Chinese medicine and philosophy and have studied classical Chinese for over 15 years. I may not be able to ask for soup, but I can make a stab at translating very obscure classical Chinese texts! This immersion alongside reading, studying and teaching has allowed me to apply my ‘apprentice' style learning to my practice. I thoroughly appreciate and love what I do and am grateful daily for the opportunity to learn more and more and so be able to help my patients and students ever more!

    *CEU/CPD Approvals

Some accreditation bodies have course approval expirations. If the approval expires, you will see a notice next to the name with a date of expiration: "[Until YYYY/MM/DD]". Please factor this date into your own renewal deadline. If an approval expires, you will be able to request that it is renewed and we will submit it for you within 2 business days. Renewals normally come back to us after 30 days. If your accreditation body is not listed under the "Approved" section, you may find it under the "Pending" section. That means that it is either currently pending approval, or that it is available for you to request: "[Upon Request]". New course approvals usually come back to us after 45 days. We use an automated system within our platform that allows you to make these requests in an easy and convenient way. Just visit the course page in your Net of Knowledge account and click the "Request Approval" button at the top. Each "Course and CEUs/CPDs" purchase grants you 1 request per accreditation body. If you request a course approval and do not complete it before its new expiration date, you will need to purchase another "CEU/CPD Add-On" to make another request. If the course is ineligible for approval with an accreditation body due to their subject-matter policies, it will be listed as "[Ineligible]", and no requests will be possible for the course.
