Moxibustion + Incense

The main types of moxa include moxa sticks, moxa cones, loose moxa, smokeless moxa, stick-on moxa, needle moxa, and electric moxa devices. Practitioners choose different forms of moxa based on treatment style, heat intensity, smoke level, and application method.

Direct moxibustion places burning moxa close to or directly on the skin, while indirect moxibustion uses a barrier, a device, or distance between the moxa and the body. Indirect techniques commonly use moxa sticks, or stick-on moxa for controlled heat application and are used with moxa burning/holding devices or manual application.

Traditional moxa is made from dried mugwort and produces noticeable smoke and aroma when burned. Smokeless moxa is made by charring mugwort into a rigid coal, typically burning hotter, slower, and creating less smoke and odor while still providing heat for moxibustion treatments.

Common moxibustion accessories include moxa holders, boxes, bowls, burners/warmers, extinguishers, moxa/heat shields, dishes, and creams/ointments. These tools help practitioners apply heat safely, control smoke, handle burning moxa during treatments, and treat skin after moxibustion therapy.

Moxa sticks and rolls are compressed, packed, cylinders of mugwort used to warm treatment areas without direct skin contact. Practitioners select each type based on treatment technique and heat control.

Stick-on moxa, smokeless moxa sticks, and pre-formed moxa rolls are often the easiest options for beginners but it is also based on preference. These products are designed for simpler handling, controlled heat application, and reduced smoke during treatments.
