What is California Proposition 65?

California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, commonly known as Proposition 65, is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings when products may expose consumers to chemicals identified by the State of California as causing cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

The Proposition 65 list has grown significantly since its introduction and now includes hundreds of naturally occurring and synthetic substances. Many listed chemicals are commonly found in the environment, foods, plants, minerals, and consumer products.

As a result, Proposition 65 warning labels are common throughout California and can be found on a wide variety of products and in many public locations.

Why Do Some Lhasa OMS Products Carry a Proposition 65 Warning?

Certain products may contain trace amounts of substances that are naturally present in soil, water, or the environment. Examples include naturally occurring heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, or arsenic.

Although these substances may be present at extremely low levels, California law may require a Proposition 65 warning if exposure exceeds the state's conservative notification thresholds.

The presence of a Proposition 65 warning does not mean a product is unsafe, contaminated, or violates any federal safety standards. It simply means the product is subject to California's labeling requirements.

Does Proposition 65 Apply Outside of California?
