Laurie Regan

Dr. Regan’s journey in natural medicine started with a desire to find larger truths behind the quantitative science she pursued while earning a Doctorate in Neurobiology from Harvard University. She worked on the curriculum review committee at Harvard, but in the end said she “just felt that straight science wasn’t full enough, it didn’t give a complete picture of what was important.”  The missing pieces started to fall into place when she came to NUNM to study homeopathy in 1993 and discovered that classical Chinese medicine embodied the spiritual aspects of healing that she was seeking. Academically, she focused on earning a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine, but her personal interest in Chinese medicine led Dr. Regan to join Dr. Heiner Fruehauf and NUNM students on annual trips to China to learn from master practitioners and healers. She took classes in classical Chinese medicine, and became a qigong instructor; after graduating, she taught classes in neuroanatomy, physiology and pathology at NUNM, and remained active in curriculum development.  “Medical students and patients are looking for alternative ways to treat illness, especially chronic disease. They are seeking a path to wholeness and wellness,” she says “I want to gain more visibility for our program and for the medicine.”

Gina Gilbert

I grew up with a passion for learning, teaching and traveling. My mother, born and raised in Brazil, could speak seven languages. She was my inspiration for studying foreign languages.   I did my undergraduate studies at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada; my goal was to become an interpreter in the United Nations. As it turns out, I became an interpreter of body language, mapping and interpreting energy fields to support the bodies innate ability to heal itself.   In the 80's, I visited China, Japan and Hong Kong, and studied Shiatsu and Hara Diagnosis in Japan.  Shiatsu is a type of massage, sometimes referred to as:“needle-less” acupuncture.  Like acupuncture, Shiatsu uses meridians and points to balance the body,  mind and spirit, using touch as opposed to needles.   The Japanese call the "Hara", or “gut”, the second brain- I actually believe that through gut reactions we receive our deepest information; and what I so love about animals. They are totally gut driven, intuitive beings.  In 1993, I graduated from a three year post- graduate training in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine at Tri-State College of Acupuncture in New York. This two thousand year old system examines the relationship between nature, humans, animals, using the Five Element paradigm or “Five Elements” of Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood.

Michael Max

The most important thing I’ve learned in my 20+ of practicing Chinese medicine is that acupuncture works from the inside out. Our work with needles puts nothing into a person, but rather calls forth a response from them. Learning to invite the body’s vitality to bring people into a deeper sense of coherence and wellbeing is something that becomes more intriguing to me as the years pass.  I’ve had the good fortune to travel a little, to study in Taiwan and China, translate some materials that I found interesting, and to run clinics in a number of different of locations. I’ve been at this long enough to see how my ideas, beliefs and methods have changed over time. So gradually have become a bit less dogmatic and at the same time made peace with what methods work for me and which do not. Chinese medicine is an invitation to ever inhabit our growing edge. We are constantly challenged by the limits of our understanding and the necessity to update what we think we know.  These days I split my time between clinical work, writing and hosting the Qiological podcast.

She blogs for parents about all aspects of childhood from a Chinese medicine perspective.

Thomas Sorenson

I was introduced to acupuncture in 1996 while undertaking studies in Korean language and culture in Seoul, South Korea. One acupuncture treatment with a few needles on the opposite leg of the knee that I had injured during martial arts practice took away my knee pain instantly and completely. This experience changed my life around - from the first needle I had a new destination. I had to learn acupuncture.   After returning to Copenhagen, Denmark, from Korea, I started studying TCM. I went into private practice immediately after graduating, but didn’t find the TCM style of acupuncture a good match for me so I started looking at different styles of acupuncture and Japanese Meridian Therapy showed up on my radar. I was very fortunate to be accepted as a student of Ikeda Masakazu Sensei. He instilled in me a deep respect for the classics and showed me how to think in terms of basic principles and how to be pragmatic about them. I really owe him my practice.  Now I practice acupuncture based on Meridian Therapy diagnostic- and needling techniques, guided by the classics and incorporating the very powerful protocols of Korean Saam acupuncture. ...and after 17 years of practice I am still having fun in the clinic every day.

She completed Medical Cannabis Coaching certification through Holistic Caring, Inc., and regularly geeks out on all things medical cannabis with influencers in the field.   Lisa is a former substance abuse counselor turned passionate educator and medical cannabis advocate, and is dedicated to restoring Da Ma to it's place as a "superior herb" as described by Li Shizhen in his apex materia medica. Her love for this special herb began with a meeting with a medical cannabis doctor in 2017 who referred her to a "bud tender" for instruction on how to best use this plant in conjunction with chemotherapy. Instead of relying on someone with no medical education to guide this process, Lisa dove deep into the medical literature and used what she found to support her own healing. She now uses this knowledge to help others safely and intelligently incorporate cannabis into their wellness routines.  Lisa's publications include "Cannabis in Chinese Medicine: Modern Interpretations and Integrations", JCM October 2022, and "Acupuncture for Treatment of Post-Radiation Skin Lesions in a Stage-4 Triple Positive Breast Cancer Patient: A Case Study", JAIM Fall 2022. She has been a guest on various acupuncture and holistic health podcasts and radio shows talking about cannabis in Chinese medicine. She is also a group expert for a variety of on-line breast cancer support groups for topics including sexuality for breast cancer patients and cannabis during and after breast cancer treatment.   When she's not in the clinic or deep into a MedLine search, Lisa can be found cooking with her husband, designing jewelry, hanging out with her cat, or riding crazy distances on a bicycle.

He maintains a practice with a significant number of babies and children and disability patients. He was fortunate to study with the now world famous Geelong Osteopath Thomas Ambrose Bowen during the final 3 years of his life. Kevin returned the favor in some measure, by keeping Tom's practice operating for three months while it was on the market. Tom held a free monthly clinic for disability clients for much of his 35 years in practice. This clinic was kept running for some 12 years after tom's death. Over the last 18 years, and following his exposure to the Master Tung system of acupuncture, Kevin has developed his own unique approach to  the use of  gentle finger tip contact of acupuncture point pairs to treat muscular skeletal presentations. This is now known as Dao Ma (Coupled Point) Posture Method. These Methods have been developed sufficiently to present the approach in both face to face workshop and online formats. The Dao Ma and Bowen Methods may be used with needling and most Tui na and Shiatsu techniques. Kevin has a long and continuing role in Program Advisory Committees in University courses in both TCM and in Osteopathy. Grace Stojanov

Grace Stojanov graduated with a Master of Science degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine in 2009 from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. She is licensed in the state of California and is a nationally Board-certified Chinese Herbalist. Before becoming a Chinese medical practitioner, Grace found her footing in healthcare as an open-water lifeguard and First Responder. Pursuing this avenue of service, she worked as an EMT in an Emergency Department and Hyperbaric chamber. Expanding her knowledge, she became an Orthopedic Technologist, Certified. She assisted orthopedic surgeons for several years in the clinic and in surgery. It was during this time that she recognized the healthcare need for more extensive non-emergent, non-invasive medical options. While pondering the question, if a condition does not respond to medication or physical therapy, and waiting for surgery is the presumed last option what else may be done, Grace discovered the practice of Chinese medicine—Eastern nutrition, bodywork, meditative exercise, acupuncture, and herbalism. She embarked on this path and never looked back.  Over the years her diagnostic skills developed, and she expanded her practice to include internal medicine, women's health, and reproductive medicine. She benefited greatly from the mentorship of Dr. Deb Davies from whom she underwent extensive pregnancy and birth training, including becoming a birth doula. Grace now works with couples and individuals seeking to support their fertility and nurturing them through all stages of their parenting journey—preconception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Through this experience she has come to understand just how significantly the way a person feels contributes to their expression of health and how important addressing human psychology is for harmonious wellbeing. Face reading is the psychological branch of Chinese medicine and has been used in practice since this medicine’s inception. Grace was fortunate to have studied extensively with Lillian Bridges, attaining the rank of Master Face Reader through Lillian’s legacy, the Lotus Institute. She brings this knowledge into every session with her patients, adding rich layers of meaning to their experience and understanding.

Randal Lyons

July 17th, 1994 is a dividing line in my life. It’s my sober date. By that point I had been studying Chinese medical and martial arts for 6 years, had just gotten my 1st license in Oriental Bodywork and was in the 2nd year of a 4 year’s masters program at Emperor’s College of Traditional Oriental Medicine. I was looking forward to a new future and one that was driven by the question, “How does holistic medicine get & keep people sober?”  That was a complete U-turn from what had driven my previous incarnation. I was a relocated New Yorker in Hollywood, California, where I lived hand-to-mouth in the world of big hair, loud guitar, rock ’n roll. This provided the perfect setting for me to perform the last half of my 17 years worth of “personal field research” in the arena of addictions. It also gave me invaluable “hands on experience” that I couldn’t imagine getting any other way.    The last two decades on this sober side of that dividing line have been spent searching for direct answers to that original question. And because no one has been able to do that for me, I’ve been forced to find it on my own by exploring what I love. My search has given me the privilege of studying with some of the most revered leaders in the fields of Traditional Chinese & East Asian Medicine, shamanism, martial arts, cranio-sacral therapy, movement therapy, psychology, mythology, poetry and writing. From this, I have synthesized a clear, concise model of holistic treatment for addiction that I call Alchemist Recovery.  As part of this work I have: - Treated tens of thousands of people from all walks of life and in all stages of addiction? - Served on staff at hospitals, medical centers and addiction treatment centers? - Created a successful private practice? - Written books & articles in national publications? - Taught my material to thousands all across North America and beyond?  I greatly look forward to seeing what’s next along this path, as I share it with my wife, partner and brilliant colleague in the Medicine, Dr. Dana Leigh Lyons, and leave notes from the experiences along the way answering, “What exactly does dad do?” for my son Tyler.  Whichever side of that dividing line of sobriety I have found myself on, I have lived by and found solace in the choice offered by this declaration:  “There are only two ways to live your life: as though nothing is a miracle, or as though everything is a miracle.” — Albert Einstein

Deborah Woolf

I am crazy keen acupuncturist and super enthusiastic lecturer, who, by chance, have discovered and loved the cosmology and numerology inherent in Chinese Philosophy and Medicine. I was lucky to study at the International College of Oriental Medicine, the oldest acupuncture college in the UK, which teaches all the acupuncture points, as well as philosophy and theory, based on Five Phases, wuxing ??, and Stems and Branches, wuyun liuqi ????. My course was a 5 year long extravaganza, and I came out the other side, exhausted, changed and driven. Since then (more than 20 years ago) I have not stopped treating, teaching and studying: these three activities interact fruitfully with each other, allowing me to deepen my understanding and practice of this amazing approach to health, the body and the cosmos.   As I am the daughter of academics I took what I was taught and read around the subjects, to immerse myself more fully in ancient Chinese culture. I continue my education in classical Chinese medicine and philosophy and have studied classical Chinese for over 15 years. I may not be able to ask for soup, but I can make a stab at translating very obscure classical Chinese texts! This immersion alongside reading, studying and teaching has allowed me to apply my ‘apprentice' style learning to my practice. I thoroughly appreciate and love what I do and am grateful daily for the opportunity to learn more and more and so be able to help my patients and students ever more!

Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee

Born in Paris in 1949, Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee studied philosophy, literature and classics at Paris University where she completed her Master's degree in Classics and in Philosophy, and then in Chinese.  Elisabeth met Claude Larre s.j. when she was 20, while he was working on his PhD thesis on the Huainanzi and translating the Laozi. As a result of his influence, she began to study Chinese, working with him on Chinese classical texts. Elisabeth also studied modern Chinese with a native speaker and spent a year in Taiwan (1974) to further her studies.  In the early 1970's, Father Larre met Dr. Jean Schatz, a western physician with an interest in oriental medicine He was an acupuncturist with a special interest for the classical medical texts. At this time, Elisabeth began to embark on her study of Chinese medicine, and together with Dr. Schatz and Father Larre, began the first study group of the classical medical texts in Paris. This lead to the founding of the European School of Acupuncture in Paris in 1976.   From this common work, Father Larre, Dr. Schatz and herself co-authored A Survey of Chinese Medicine, published in 1979.  Under the auspices of the Ricci Institute in Paris, Father Larre and Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee offered lectures, seminars and conferences on Chinese classical thought and in the mid 1980s, she began to accompany Father Larre on his teaching engagements in both the UK and US.  Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee also worked closely with Father Larre on the Grand Ricci dictionary, completing the first publication  in 1999.   Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee continues to teach worldwide, working with both medical and philosophical Classics. She has worked with wonderful individuals such as Sandra Hill for the editing and publication of books in English through Monkey Press, Peter Firebrace for teaching in London with Orientation; Ken and Jessica Rose in the US with whom she co-founded the Three Spring Institute, and many others in different countries and languages.  Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee believes that the real knowledge of the Chinese vision of life is useful not only to understand Chinese medicine from a scholarly point of view, but also to deepen one’s practical approach and clinical skill. This is the reason why she always reads, translates and explains texts which present a precise pathology and its diagnosis treatment or a reflection on the nature and meaning of human life or anything in the between.
