Laurie Regan

Dr. Regan’s journey in natural medicine started with a desire to find larger truths behind the quantitative science she pursued while earning a Doctorate in Neurobiology from Harvard University. She worked on the curriculum review committee at Harvard, but in the end said she “just felt that straight science wasn’t full enough, it didn’t give a complete picture of what was important.”  The missing pieces started to fall into place when she came to NUNM to study homeopathy in 1993 and discovered that classical Chinese medicine embodied the spiritual aspects of healing that she was seeking. Academically, she focused on earning a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine, but her personal interest in Chinese medicine led Dr. Regan to join Dr. Heiner Fruehauf and NUNM students on annual trips to China to learn from master practitioners and healers. She took classes in classical Chinese medicine, and became a qigong instructor; after graduating, she taught classes in neuroanatomy, physiology and pathology at NUNM, and remained active in curriculum development.  “Medical students and patients are looking for alternative ways to treat illness, especially chronic disease. They are seeking a path to wholeness and wellness,” she says “I want to gain more visibility for our program and for the medicine.”

Gina Gilbert

I grew up with a passion for learning, teaching and traveling. My mother, born and raised in Brazil, could speak seven languages. She was my inspiration for studying foreign languages.   I did my undergraduate studies at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada; my goal was to become an interpreter in the United Nations. As it turns out, I became an interpreter of body language, mapping and interpreting energy fields to support the bodies innate ability to heal itself.   In the 80's, I visited China, Japan and Hong Kong, and studied Shiatsu and Hara Diagnosis in Japan.  Shiatsu is a type of massage, sometimes referred to as:“needle-less” acupuncture.  Like acupuncture, Shiatsu uses meridians and points to balance the body,  mind and spirit, using touch as opposed to needles.   The Japanese call the "Hara", or “gut”, the second brain- I actually believe that through gut reactions we receive our deepest information; and what I so love about animals. They are totally gut driven, intuitive beings.  In 1993, I graduated from a three year post- graduate training in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine at Tri-State College of Acupuncture in New York. This two thousand year old system examines the relationship between nature, humans, animals, using the Five Element paradigm or “Five Elements” of Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood.

Michael Max

The most important thing I’ve learned in my 20+ of practicing Chinese medicine is that acupuncture works from the inside out. Our work with needles puts nothing into a person, but rather calls forth a response from them. Learning to invite the body’s vitality to bring people into a deeper sense of coherence and wellbeing is something that becomes more intriguing to me as the years pass.  I’ve had the good fortune to travel a little, to study in Taiwan and China, translate some materials that I found interesting, and to run clinics in a number of different of locations. I’ve been at this long enough to see how my ideas, beliefs and methods have changed over time. So gradually have become a bit less dogmatic and at the same time made peace with what methods work for me and which do not. Chinese medicine is an invitation to ever inhabit our growing edge. We are constantly challenged by the limits of our understanding and the necessity to update what we think we know.  These days I split my time between clinical work, writing and hosting the Qiological podcast.

She blogs for parents about all aspects of childhood from a Chinese medicine perspective.

Thomas Sorenson

I was introduced to acupuncture in 1996 while undertaking studies in Korean language and culture in Seoul, South Korea. One acupuncture treatment with a few needles on the opposite leg of the knee that I had injured during martial arts practice took away my knee pain instantly and completely. This experience changed my life around - from the first needle I had a new destination. I had to learn acupuncture.   After returning to Copenhagen, Denmark, from Korea, I started studying TCM. I went into private practice immediately after graduating, but didn’t find the TCM style of acupuncture a good match for me so I started looking at different styles of acupuncture and Japanese Meridian Therapy showed up on my radar. I was very fortunate to be accepted as a student of Ikeda Masakazu Sensei. He instilled in me a deep respect for the classics and showed me how to think in terms of basic principles and how to be pragmatic about them. I really owe him my practice.  Now I practice acupuncture based on Meridian Therapy diagnostic- and needling techniques, guided by the classics and incorporating the very powerful protocols of Korean Saam acupuncture. ...and after 17 years of practice I am still having fun in the clinic every day.
