Course Overview
A 78- year-old man comes in the Emergency department with back pain that radiates down his legs. Treatment protocols for this condition are vastly different depending in which paradigm of medicine is used. In this recorded talk, Dr. Keown discusses and compares how back pain is approached from a Western perspective, and how it is approached from the Eastern perspective. He introduces an understanding of fascia that allows us to approach back pain from East to West with equanimity. As an emergency room physician, he discusses some of the techniques he has used to successfully treat patients in acute pain.
Objective
  • Understand embryology creates the connections in the body
  • Fascia is the structural building block
  • Qi moves in the spaces in tissues

Daniel Keown is a very enthusiastic and energetic speaker who infuses humour and stories into his teaching style. I really enjoyed this course and would like to see more courses presented by him.

    Wendy C.- Canada

This is tremendously important work. David Keown takes the language of Channel Theory and the visual artifacts of surgery and makes it clear that we have concrete ways to understand what we are doing when we are practicing acupuncture. Not only does Dr. Keown demystify acupuncture, he shows how important it is that surgeons and acupuncturists learn from one another in order to practice the best medicine possible for our patients.

    Erica T.- United States

    About Dan Keown

Dr. Keown received a degree in medicine from Manchester University in 1998 and has worked continuously as a registered doctor since. He currently works in the Homerton hospital in Hackney where he is in the process of introducing acupuncture to the Emergency department. In 2008 he completed a degree in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture from the College of Integrated Medicine affiliated with Kingston University, and has been a member of the British Acupuncture Council since. In 2010 he studied alongside the renowned Dr. Wang Ju-Yi at the Institute of Channel Diagnosis in Beiing. Currently Dr. Keown uses a form of acupuncture that is based heavily on the work of Dr. Wang Ju-Yi. He has found this to be the most consistent form of acupuncture and has often amazed his medical colleagues with the results this can give. Dr. Keown is the author of the popular, newly-released book The Spark in the Machine: How the Science of Acupuncture Explains the Mysteries of Western Medicine.

    *CEU/CPD Approvals

Some accreditation bodies have course approval expirations. If the approval expires, you will see a notice next to the name with a date of expiration: "[Until YYYY/MM/DD]". Please factor this date into your own renewal deadline. If an approval expires, you will be able to request that it is renewed and we will submit it for you within 2 business days. Renewals normally come back to us after 30 days. If your accreditation body is not listed under the "Approved" section, you may find it under the "Pending" section. That means that it is either currently pending approval, or that it is available for you to request: "[Upon Request]". New course approvals usually come back to us after 45 days. We use an automated system within our platform that allows you to make these requests in an easy and convenient way. Just visit the course page in your Net of Knowledge account and click the "Request Approval" button at the top. Each "Course and CEUs/CPDs" purchase grants you 1 request per accreditation body. If you request a course approval and do not complete it before its new expiration date, you will need to purchase another "CEU/CPD Add-On" to make another request. If the course is ineligible for approval with an accreditation body due to their subject-matter policies, it will be listed as "[Ineligible]", and no requests will be possible for the course.
