This course explores drug-herb interactions from a new perspective. Basic pharmacology is utilized to explain how interactions occur through the ADME scheme (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination). What sets this seminar apart from others on this subject, besides its thoroughness, is the application of evidence based medical techniques (EBM) in determining the seriousness of the interactions. This course examines several representative examples. Important concepts are illuminated in the course: levels of evidence, ADME scheme, therapeutic index, basic pharmacodynamics, and basic research techniques. The herbs used as examples are culled from the Chinese medical tradition and interactions are presented from a variety books and published research. The ultimate goal of this course is to facilitate the safe use of herbs in combination with pharmaceutical drugs, which includes assessing current research on the topic as well as learning to formulate a professional opinion in order to present to patients.

About Greg Sperber
Dr. Greg Sperber is currently a practitioner of Chinese medicine and host of Sperb’s Herbs Podcasts. Previously, he has been Vice Provost at Bastyr University California, Dean of the College of Eastern Medicine at Southern California University of Health Sciences, clinical chair and director of clinical services at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, San Diego (PCOM), and a clinical supervisor and professor at several colleges and universities. He is co-author of Integrative Pharmacology, Combining Modern Pharmacology with Integrative Medicine and Playing the Game, A Step-by-Step Approach to Accepting Insurance as an Acupuncturist. Dr. Sperber received a masters and doctor of acupuncture and Oriental medicine from PCOM, San Diego, a medical degree from Flinders University of South Australia, and a master of business administration from National University. He has been a past president of the California State Oriental Medical Association and has spoken at many conferences about Chinese medicine, business, drug-herb interactions, pharmacology, and ethics and professionalism.

If you request a course approval and do not complete it before its new expiration date, you will need to purchase another "CEU/CPD Add-On" to make another request. If the course is ineligible for approval with an accreditation body due to their subject-matter policies, it will be listed as "[Ineligible]", and no requests will be possible for the course.
