Course Overview
It seems like cannabis is EVERYWHERE these days. DO YOU KNOW how to advise your patients regarding this important herb? YOUR Patients ARE USING IT, whether as hemp (less than 0.3%THC), CBD, cannabis (more than 0.3%THC), a somewhat regulated professional herbal product, or a questionable industrial hemp "over the counter" preparation. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW? Let this class be your Primer to Practicing Good Medicine with Cannabis!

Our bodies have a master regulatory system which is now believed to be responsible for all homeostatic regulation. This regulatory system happens to contain chemicals very similar to chemicals within the cannabis plant, which can be activated and regulated through a variety of activities, foods, and herbs.

In this class, YOU will be introduced to the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), what it is, the vitally important things science has to say about it, and why it's important for a practitioner to understand.

Next, we will discuss Da Ma (Cannabis) the Superior Medicinal as it has appeared in the Chinese medicine classical texts of Shen Nong, Tao Hongjing and Li Shizhen. There will be an overview of how Da Ma is classified, how it was classically used, and an invitation to dive deeper into this fascinating medicinal in future classes and practice support groups.

Finally, there is a discussion of how Da Ma can be incorporated into the modern clinic including an overview of herb/drug interactions with common pharmaceuticals and selected case studies.
  • Be able to describe how cannabis was classified in the Shen Nong and the Ben Cao Gang Mu.
  • Understand that cannabis can interact with medications patients may be taking, and what these interactions may look like.
  • Be able to describe the components of the endocannabinoid system and its relevance to human physiology.
  • Understand the concept of the "entourage effect" and how this applies to cannabis and other herbal medicinals.

    About Lisa Nicholson

Lisa Nicholson, L.Ac., is a California licensed and nationally certified acupuncturist in private practice for over 20 years in San Diego. She is a skilled nutrition counselor and wellness coach, with a passion for helping people experiencing physical and emotional pain to reconnect with their zest for living. As a breast cancer survivor, Lisa is particularly devoted to helping other cancer patients get through their treatment and restore their health through acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, lifestyle modification, and medical cannabis. She completed Medical Cannabis Coaching certification through Holistic Caring, Inc., and regularly geeks out on all things medical cannabis with influencers in the field. Lisa is a former substance abuse counselor turned passionate educator and medical cannabis advocate, and is dedicated to restoring Da Ma to it's place as a "superior herb" as described by Li Shizhen in his apex materia medica. Her love for this special herb began with a meeting with a medical cannabis doctor in 2017 who referred her to a "bud tender" for instruction on how to best use this plant in conjunction with chemotherapy. Instead of relying on someone with no medical education to guide this process, Lisa dove deep into the medical literature and used what she found to support her own healing. She now uses this knowledge to help others safely and intelligently incorporate cannabis into their wellness routines. Lisa's publications include "Cannabis in Chinese Medicine: Modern Interpretations and Integrations", JCM October 2022, and "Acupuncture for Treatment of Post-Radiation Skin Lesions in a Stage-4 Triple Positive Breast Cancer Patient: A Case Study", JAIM Fall 2022. She has been a guest on various acupuncture and holistic health podcasts and radio shows talking about cannabis in Chinese medicine. She is also a group expert for a variety of on-line breast cancer support groups for topics including sexuality for breast cancer patients and cannabis during and after breast cancer treatment. When she's not in the clinic or deep into a MedLine search, Lisa can be found cooking with her husband, designing jewelry, hanging out with her cat, or riding crazy distances on a bicycle.

    *CEU/CPD Approvals

Some accreditation bodies have course approval expirations. If the approval expires, you will see a notice next to the name with a date of expiration: "[Until YYYY/MM/DD]". Please factor this date into your own renewal deadline. If an approval expires, you will be able to request that it is renewed and we will submit it for you within 2 business days. Renewals normally come back to us after 30 days. If your accreditation body is not listed under the "Approved" section, you may find it under the "Pending" section. That means that it is either currently pending approval, or that it is available for you to request: "[Upon Request]". New course approvals usually come back to us after 45 days. We use an automated system within our platform that allows you to make these requests in an easy and convenient way. Just visit the course page in your Net of Knowledge account and click the "Request Approval" button at the top. Each "Course and CEUs/CPDs" purchase grants you 1 request per accreditation body. If you request a course approval and do not complete it before its new expiration date, you will need to purchase another "CEU/CPD Add-On" to make another request. If the course is ineligible for approval with an accreditation body due to their subject-matter policies, it will be listed as "[Ineligible]", and no requests will be possible for the course.
