There are a number of essential points in orthopedic and sports acupuncture. Treating the supraspinatous at Small Intestine 12 is certainly one of these points. Whether for rotator cuff pathology or impingement syndrome, this is a must-know point, rarely mentioned in the Chinese texts for shoulder pain.
The supraspinatous abducts the arm – it lifts the arm up from the side. Virtually all of our activities rely on overhead arm movement. This muscle is essential to sports as well as everyday activities. When the muscle is weak, imbalance and biomechanical issues result in pain. Additionally, the supraspinatous has a pain referal pattern to the deltoid region of the shoulder. While the muscle is on the Taiyang Small Intestine channel, pain in the deltoid is usually found in Large Intestine and San Jiao meridians.
The supraspinatous is prone to inhibition – it will "turn off" with any stressful circumstances. Thus, shoulder dysfunction may be frequent and it may aggravate the pain syndromes. Muscle strain, tendinitis, and trigger points are common within the muscle itself. And shoulder impingement syndrome is a further complication of supraspinatous tendinopathy.
All this results in pain and a muscle that needs to be treated. Small Intestine 12 is a very effective place to start. Located in the belly of the supraspinatous, this is where the trigger points and motor points are located.
Long and short, you need to know Small Intestine 12 if you treat shoulder pain!
