Course Overview
A busy and productive time, wheat harvested in the north, rice planted in the south. Coming into the hot season, so eat cooling foods, avoid spicy and hot foods. Praying mantis hatch out, shrike start to sing, mockingbirds stop singing in response to the hot, humid, rainy season. The stag sheds its antlers, the cicadas start singing, the pinellia plant grows as we come into midsummer. Great abundance, family and group work around the well. The marriage of opposites, the return of the yin, a new period established.

5th lunar month is 7th branch wu ? fire in the fire season of summer, in a double fire horse year, with the shao yang fire climate. The summer organ is the heart, as is the 5th month meridian and the matching meridian. This is then a time of heightened focus on the heart with its clarity, joy, peacefulness and radiance. The long midsummer days and potential for excess heat can also lead to over-exhaustion and being overcome by summer heat, so this must be guarded against.

The classics recommend shu and ying points for summer, so HT 7 and HT 8. Other heat-reducing points will be helpful too, such as HT 3 and HT 5 as well as keeping up fluid intake, eating light cooling foods, resting in the day and exercising in the early morning and evening, maintaining a cheerful mood.

Longest day and shortest night, the summer solstice is a key point of change in the year where yin is born in the heart of yang.

The traditional qi gong exercises activate thoracic 6 and 5.
