Course Overview
Dr. Heiner Fruehauf's master class on Chinese herbal medicine deepens the lifelong learner's mastery of herbal prescribing by rooting their understanding in classical principles and practices. It accommodates the needs and interests of all levels, from students of Chinese medicine and newer practitioners to seasoned practitioners who are ever-refining their capacity to successfully treat any condition presented in the clinic.

For each of eight major herb families, Heiner describes the energetic properties of the lead herb, common herb pairs, and the major herbal formulas. Case examples are presented to provide a clinical context for learning the indications for particular formulas within each family. With this base of knowledge, practitioners can stand on firm ground while being flexible in their ability to design herbal treatments that effectively treat the complex patterns manifesting in our increasingly out-of-balance world.

In this second session devoted to "Yellow" formulas, Heiner compares representative formulas in this family of heat- and toxicity-clearing herbs, discussing their therapeutic actions, indications, and clinical applications. The focus is on formulas in which Dahuang is the chief herb, including Dahuang Mudanpi Tang, Yinchenhao Tang and Wenpi Tang. Case studies are used to explain how to modify/combine formulas to address specific presenting patterns. Tiger Pearls, which combine Taohe Chengqi Tang and Wenpi Tang, are used as an example.
Objective
  • Discuss and compare Dahuang Mundanpi Tang, Yinchenhao Tang, and Wenpi Tang, addressing historical context, structure (including any common herb pairings), dosages, indications, typical applications and case examples.
  • From the Dahuang formulas discussed, explain the distinguishing features enabling you to choose the most appropriate remedy for common presenting patterns.
  • Describe how to craft modifications of Dahuang formulas and/or suggest formula combinations that will achieve a desired therapeutic effect for unique presenting patterns.

    About Heiner Fruehauf

Heiner Fruehauf is the Founding Professor of the College of Classical Chinese Medicine at National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) in Portland, Oregon, where he has been teaching since 1992. As a practitioner, Dr. Fruehauf focuses on the complementary treatment of difficult and recalcitrant diseases, including cancer, chronic respiratory and digestive disorders, and inflammation of the nervous system. His scholarly endeavors include an ongoing research project on the holistic cosmology of Chinese medicine, in essence a decoding of the ancient symbolism that once correlated the macrocosm of the natural world with the microcosm of the human body. In addition, Dr. Fruehauf founded Classical Pearls Herbal Formulas over a decade ago in order to bring the formulas used in his clinical practice to a more accessible form for clinicians. The endeavor has also allowed him to maintain control over ingredient sourcing, procurement, and processing in mainland China, including supporting small family farms who grow, harvest, and process many of the raw ingredients. Dr. Fruehauf is also the director of the Heron Institute, a nonprofit institution for the research and preservation of traditional life science. In this capacity, he has been leading the Sacred Mountain Retreat for three decades, a semiannual study tour to the mountains of southwest China that focuses on qigong and other aspects of classical Chinese medicine. He lives in the beautiful Columbia Gorge in Oregon with his wife, Sheron, their kids, 5 goats, 2 cats, and 11 chickens.

    *CEU/CPD Approvals

Some accreditation bodies have course approval expirations. If the approval expires, you will see a notice next to the name with a date of expiration: "[Until YYYY/MM/DD]". Please factor this date into your own renewal deadline. If an approval expires, you will be able to request that it is renewed and we will submit it for you within 2 business days. Renewals normally come back to us after 30 days. If your accreditation body is not listed under the "Approved" section, you may find it under the "Pending" section. That means that it is either currently pending approval, or that it is available for you to request: "[Upon Request]". New course approvals usually come back to us after 45 days. We use an automated system within our platform that allows you to make these requests in an easy and convenient way. Just visit the course page in your Net of Knowledge account and click the "Request Approval" button at the top. Each "Course and CEUs/CPDs" purchase grants you 1 request per accreditation body. If you request a course approval and do not complete it before its new expiration date, you will need to purchase another "CEU/CPD Add-On" to make another request. If the course is ineligible for approval with an accreditation body due to their subject-matter policies, it will be listed as "[Ineligible]", and no requests will be possible for the course.
